General description:

Under the supervision of the Managing Director, the General Manager will direct the Lead Hands supporting the planning, repair and completion of projects, ensuring they are on time and on budget while maintaining Hydro Scotfords quality expectations. The ability to provide Machining / Millwright expertise, manage multiple projects, schedules, and communicate in a professional manner with both internal and external resources and team members will be key to success in this role.

Previous experience with pumps and rotating equipment, either as a Machinist or Millwright, is considered an asset.

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Exercise technical guidance of shop labour, advising Managers and Team Leads of technical problems within area of expertise
  • Supervise overall progress of jobs ensuring we meet customer deadlines and price quotes
  • Support the team with mechanical expertise in such areas as design, modification, maintenance, product quality and production efficiencies, safety, throughput, etc.
  • Make timely and appropriate decisions by integrating multiple sources of information and perspectives
  • Effectively implement and improve the organizations processes and systems to drive business growth and success
  • Work with managers and team leads to direct and organize staff and equipment to meet project requirements and deadlines
  • Prioritize work and tasks as directed by the Managing Director
  • Promote safety rules and awareness among crew members, and report unsafe/dangerous situations to the OH&S representative
  • Responsible for implementation of NCR’s, completion of NCR forms, and communicate same to Quality Control and Managers
  • Issue stop work orders (holding point) if work scope is not presented clearly or if important information is missing
  • Attend and participate in safety and tool box meetings
  • Mentor, coach and train staff
  • Work in conjunction with the floor managers regarding personnel management; scheduling, safety, hiring, terminations, suspensions, advancements, demotions, etc.
  • Monitor performance and conduct regular feedback and review sessions with direct reports; and ensure other staff also receive same from their supervisors, addressing matters of performance concerns as soon as they arise
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills and/or experience:

  • Experience with rotating equipment, pumps, machine shops, welding and fabrication, project management, documentation control and personnel management
  • Working knowledge of industry equipment, its safe operation and basic maintenance
  • Strong mechanical aptitude
  • Supervisory and/or Leadership training and/or experience as an asset for entry into role; or support for acquiring training (e.g., Blue Seal Program, through Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training Board; or equivalent)
  • Strong supervisory and communication skills with the ability to create and foster a cohesive team environment
  • Model appropriate behaviours that increase and promote productive work behaviours
  • Strong Business Acumen
  • Experience working with Microsoft project or other project management software

Job Demands:

  • Typical office schedule is Monday through Friday, but this role is frequently required to work evenings, nights, weekends and holidays to support business operations
  • Must have reliable transportation to get to and from work on time for each shift
